I started learning how to swim about 2 years ago.
Now someone could say, “Why is this even worth a blog post?” But for me, it really is.
Because this was never just about swimming.
It was about fear.
I have always been uncomfortable around large amounts of water. Pools, deep water, even the thought of losing control in water made me anxious. And when you become an adult, fear becomes easier to hide because you simply avoid the thing altogether.
So for years, I did exactly that.
But something interesting started happening as I grew in my career, business, and personal life.
I realized that the way we approach one uncomfortable thing is usually the same way we approach many other uncomfortable things.
Difficult conversations.
Starting something new.
Being a beginner again.
Showing up consistently when progress is slow.
And that is where my coaching mindset kicked in.
One thing I have learned from coaching and mentoring people is that most people do not fail because they are incapable. They fail because they struggle to stay in the process long enough for growth to happen.
So instead of trying to “become a swimmer,” I changed the goal.
My focus became:
- Show up.
- Reduce fear slowly.
- Build familiarity.
- Celebrate tiny wins.
- Repeat.
Some days progress looked embarrassing.
Other days it looked exciting.
But over time, the water stopped feeling like an enemy and started feeling like a skill I could eventually understand.
That shift changed something in me.
It reminded me that confidence is usually built after action, not before it.
And honestly, this is one of the biggest reasons I started building Invested - Effort Tracker.
Because life gets busy. Work gets demanding. Motivation disappears.
But growth rarely comes from intensity alone. It usually comes from consistent effort over time.
The app has been helping me track and protect the small efforts I continue making, even during the busiest weeks. Including things like swimming.
I am still early in this journey, but I am learning something important:
Sometimes the biggest life changes start with repeatedly showing up to something that once scared you.
More on that in the next post.
